Vid40: Free Audio-Visual Synthesis Software

Vid40 is a free (free as in freedom and free as in beer) two-channel video mixer and audio-visual synthesizer designed for live performance use. Vid40's features include:

real-time mixing of up to 40 video clips at a time (20 clips per channel)
on-the-fly loading of new movie banks into either channel
up to 20 unique, real-time video effects per channel
real-time recording of performances saved as a new movie
MIDI controller support
hot-key shortcuts for mouse-less mixing
openGL video plane rendering for a wide range 3D visual effects
savable session presets for quick performance setup and recall of settings
open access to the source code (Max/MSP/Jitter) for user customization

Vid40 is currently undergoing a major overhaul. Updated features will include:

programmable MIDI control of all pertinent parameters
a new generative sound engine and audio-visual feedback network
sync sound recordings of performances
new effects and effect chain customization
improved CPU performance and resolution options
an updated graphic user interface

The new version of Vid40 is slated for completion by January 2010, at which time it will be available for download on this site. Until then, you can grab the old version and begin fullfilling your vapo-rubbing VJ dreams...
